Welcome to Corolla Wild Horse Fund

The wild horses of the Currituck Outer Banks have survived nearly 500 years of fierce Nor’easters and hurricanes. They are truly representative of the Outer Banks spirit – untamed and rugged – and are an integral part of what draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to the northern beaches every year. Nowhere else can you see wild Mustangs walking along the beach and grazing among beach homes.
The Corolla Wild Horse Fund was formed in 1989 by a group of concerned citizens to heighten awareness about the presence of wild horses in the area. As the Currituck Outer Banks became more and more developed, twenty horses were killed or injured by vehicles on Highway 12.  Operating under the Outer Banks Conservationists, Inc., the Corolla Wild Horse Fund worked with Currituck County, U.S. Fish & Wildlife, and the NC Estuarine Research Reserve to have 7,544 acres of the northern-most beaches defined as a horse sanctuary. By 1996, the remaining horses were relocated behind two sound-to-sea fences. The Fund incorporated as a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit charity in 2001. Our sole mission is to protect and preserve the last remaining herd of Spanish Mustangs on the northern Outer Banks. The Colonial Spanish Mustang is on the Critical Breed list of the American Livestock Conservancy and on the Critical list of the Equus Survival Trust.  The Colonial Spanish Mustang was also designated the North Carolina State Horse in May 2010.
CWHF is located in Old Corolla Village, Corolla, NC, where we operate an interactive wild horse educational museum and museum store. We welcome visitors year round and offer children’s activities during the summer and holidays.

Mustang Visit

Mustang Visit

Every Wednesday from April to November come pet a gentled Colonial Spanish Mustang at the Wild Horse Museum. Kids of all ages can learn about the wild horses of Corolla and how to help preserve and protect this historic treasure. The Corolla Wild Horse Fund is the non-profit organization that is responsible for managing the wild horses. Our full time herd manager will be on hand to answer all your questions. Did you know the Corolla Wild Horse Fund responds 24/7 to emergencies? When a horse needs medical attention the Corolla Wild Horse Fund staff and volunteers work under the direction of the herd manager to gently round it up into the horse trailer. It is transported to a vet for treatment and then recuperates at a boarding facility. Once healed, the horse is trained for its new domestic life. Unfortunately, any horse that must be removed from the wild is not allowed to go back. It has been exposed to domestic horse diseases for which the wild herd has no immunity. These horses enter our adoption program and may find a new home anywhere from Texas to Maine or beyond! Find out where the horses came from, why you should never feed them or get too close, and why a congressman got involved. This activity is fun, educational, and free! Discover the benefits of membership, tour the museum, learn about the adoption program and more. Free
