Bluewater Seafood Market

Bluewater Seafood offers fresh-caught fish, clams, crabmeat, scallops, lobsters and other treats from the sea. They also carry everything else you need to prepare a delicious seafood dinner at home, including fresh produce, marinades, spices and seafood tools. Or call ahead and have your crabs, shrimp, lobster and crab legs steamed to order. For a real seafood feast, order one of their steamer buckets to go; just select your favorite seafood to fill it. Stop here on the way out of town to take local seafood home to your freezer. Bluewater is open every day in season.

In North Carolina, all liquor and spirits other than beer and wine are sold at special package stores by the name of ABC Stores. It’s near the south entrance of the Currituck Club, a golfing community off N.C. Highway 12. Checks are not accepted. Beer and wine are sold at grocery and convenience stores.

Catch all your fishing supplies by visiting Corolla Bait and Tackle. From fresh bait to chartered fishing excursions, Keith Cummings and his staff of experienced anglers put together the right rod, reel and tackle combo so you can maximize your fishing experience. Heck, they even offer two-hour-long surf fishing classes all summer. There’s also fun fishing paraphernalia such as hats, T-shirts and a line of leather wallets, checkbook covers and key ring tags that each sport colorful, embroidered game fish. This candle shop isn’t like any other and is certainly a sensory experience. In addition to candles, they also carry bath bombs, soaps and ducky delights including hand-crafted locally made gifts from the beach. You can find something for all ages here. Be sure and try their wax-dipping tank, using lots of great colors you can create your own hands in wax! It’s fun for children and adults.

This big cluster of shops is on the corner of Ocean Trail and Austin Street, at the main entrance to Corolla Light. It’s just south of the entrance to the Whalehead Club.

New owner Tony of Uncle Ike’s fame is emphasizing the deli this year, bringing in Boar’s Head meats and cheeses and serving delicious breakfast sandwiches, hot and cold subs, sandwiches and more. A sushi bar is in the works with eat-in and to-go options, and there are a few seats at tables inside if you’d like to sit and enjoy your lunch. They also have a pool table, sell beer, wine, and other beverages and a limited amount of grocery items.
Corolla Surf Shop & The Corolla Surfing Museum—Monteray Plaza

Putting all their eggs in one basket in 2010, Corolla Surf Shop moved all of its operations into their Monteray Plaza location. Not only will you find all the best surf brand names in bathing suits, rash guards, surfboards, bodyboards, wetsuits, skimboards, bodyboards, skateboards and stand-up paddle boards (also know as (SUPs), sunglasses, surfboards, etc., but you can also rent most of these items. Stop in if the waves come up and you’re not prepared or you’re looking to try something new. Just learning? Book a surf lesson! Their top-notch surf school offers lessons for those 9 and older and was recently written up in the NY Times. It was also recommended by Fitness Magazine as one of the top surf schools on the East Coast.
The shop is worth a stop even if it’s just to enjoy their unrivaled collection of classic surfboards that were acquired by Steve and Brant Wise. The boards, hanging from the ceilings of the shop, represent many of the small, experimental designs of the 1960s. There are boards by Dewey Weber, CON, Surfboards Australia, Bing, Gordon and Smith, Bunger, Hobie and others, with a good representation of collectible boards from both the East and West coasts. You’ll also see memorabilia and photography including pictures from last year’s August storms showing local surfers charging some of the biggest waves of the season.
Corolla Wild Horse Museum Stores

The Corolla Wild Horse Fund operates two mission-related museum stores. The first store is located in the Wild Horse Museum at old Corolla Schoolhouse. The second store is located in the Corolla Light Town Center, next to the rearing copper horse statue. Both stores offer a wide variety of horse books, videos, clothing, jewelry, ornaments, prints, gifts and toys for horse lovers of all ages. All proceeds from the sale of merchandise go directly to activities to protect, preserve and care for the horses.

Corolla Wine Cigar features beautiful sunsets and free wine tastings. They carry a large selection of wines from all over the world and continue to take a special interest in local wines and regional vineyards. You’ll also find a huge selection of specialty beers, champagne, gourmet foods and a host of wine paraphernalia like stemware, wine tools, even wine-scented candles. The walk-in humidor is stocked with premium cigars. Wine tastings are available daily; just stop in anytime. Currituck Beach Lighthouse Museum Shop

The Little Light Keeper’s House at the Currituck Beach Lighthouse Station is now a museum shop that will delight anyone who loves lighthouses. It’s fun to wander around in this historic building (moved from the Long Point Light Station in the Currituck Sound in 1920) looking at the architectural elements and at the same time see every kind of lighthouse souvenir you could possibly imagine. There are T-shirts and other clothing, hats, books, prints, figurines, lamps, ornaments, jewelry, magnets, patches, dishtowels, cards, postcards and more, not just for the Currituck Beach Lighthouse but for other lighthouses as well.
Dawn’s Harvest Mart

This fruit stand is located in the field just north of the Corolla Light Town Center. Fresh fruits like berries, peaches, plums and melons will tempt you, as will homemade breads and pies. They even carry local seafood here, like soft shells (when in season), shrimp and scallops.

Flying Smiles Kites sells kites of all kinds for all levels including single-, dual- and quad-lines. They offer free lessons and weekly “fun-flies” over at the Whalehead club. With plenty of parking, a roomy layout and 16 check-out stations, shoppers can get in and out with relative ease. The jet set can find Cohiba cigars, Dom Perignon champagne and fresh flowers. This independent neighborhood bookshop beats those mega-stores hands down. The service is impeccable and the selection is great. All subjects are covered, including a good variety of fiction, local and regional books, children’s books, cookbooks, mysteries and more. New York Times Bestsellers hardbacks are discounted, plus there are audio books, puzzles and greeting cards. If you can’t find what you want, special orders are welcomed and are prompt. They also have locations in Duck and Kitty Hawk.

If you couldn’t bring it or forgot it, don’t worry. Just for the Beach Rentals probably has it, and they can deliver it to you before you even miss it. Here you can rent baby equipment such as cribs, pack-n-plays, high chairs, exersaucers and strollers, cottage equipment like roll-a-way beds or grills, plus tennis racquets, bikes, kayaks, boogie boards, skimboards or maybe even a surfboard. They also have beach equipment including sun canopies, umbrellas and chairs. Just for the Beach also sells fishing equipment, sunglasses and suntan lotion.

In a restored village home, this is one of those stores that will certainly brighten your day. The interior itself is charming, with old doors, windows and shutters used as display stands and the original beaded board on the walls painted in old-fashioned colors. The floors creak under your feet as you wander around looking at beautiful home and porch décor such as silk florals, pillows, Guy Wolff pottery, furnishings, frames and so many other wonderful items. Carole happily features the work of more than 40 local artists, and you’ll find much to ooh and ahh over, from paintings and mixed media collage to jewelry, textiles, candles and soaps. Garden statuary, ironwork and architectural ornaments also fill the yard and the porches, lending to the rustic charm of the village itself.
