Lighthouse Garden

In a restored village home, this is one of those stores that will certainly brighten your day. The interior itself is charming, with old doors, windows and shutters used as display stands and the original beaded board on the walls painted in old-fashioned colors. The floors creak under your feet as you wander around looking at beautiful home and porch décor such as floral and silk flowers, pillows, Guy Wolff pottery, furnishings, frames and so many other wonderful items. Carole happily features the work of more than 25 local artists, and you’ll find much to ooh and ah over, from paintings and mixed media collage to jewelry, textiles, candles and soaps. Garden statuary, ironwork and architectural ornaments also fill the yard and the porches, lending to the rustic charm of the village itself.

We love the StoryPeople prints and their terrific collection of reproduction signs. You’ll also find clocks, balance toys, salvage doorknobs and mirrors and recycled glass hurricanes. The sunny-orange atmosphere in the coffee shop is enough to wake you up, but you’ll want to try the coffee too — they have quite a variety and it’s roasted in the shop to delight your olfactory senses. All the usual coffee drinks are offered as are tea and homemade pastries and other sweets, all baked in the Coffee Company’s bakery. For a nominal fee you can get connected here with wireless Internet access. Stop by the mini-newsstand on the corner to get your a.m. paper and you’re all set to go.

While visiting Corolla, please stop by Seaside Farm Market located at the corner of the TimBuck II shopping center. The market has a complete selection of local in-season produce including sweet corn, vine-ripened tomatoes and peaches picked fresh from the tree. They also carry locally made jams, BBQ and seafood sauces, local farm fresh cheeses and fresh herbs. It’s truly one stop shopping here as you can also find fresh seafood, local wine and beer. Spry Creek Home Accents

Spry Creek is owned by lifelong Outer Banks resident Karen Whitfield and her husband, John. They have converted her father’s old auto repair shop into a surprising home accents shop. They kept the old bay doors and shop flooring for charm, and be sure to look for Karen’s father’s work bench, which came out of Penny’s Hill Lifesaving Station. In the shop, Karen emphasizes local artwork like jewelry, art glass, handmade soaps and even carved decoys. She has imported linens, handcrafted ceramics from Spain, Poland, Portugal and Mexico, as well as Mexican glassware and Polish art glass. Spry Creek is named after a deepwater creek just north of the shop where local fishermen used to keep their boats and a couple of local crabbers still do.

Peggy, the stores owner and a longtime resident of Corolla, named the store for her husband, who is one of the last commercial fishermen in Corolla. The shopping, dining and entertainment venues span the range of interests, and the whole family could truly spend a day here. Restrooms are around every corner, and there’s a playground in the center.

Try My Nuts Nut Company

This store is all about nuts, including gourmet roasted nuts, chocolate-covered nuts, honey-roasted nuts and others in all flavors and varieties. Try their white trash and dirty white trash concoctions, a mix of pretzels, crisp cereals and pecans covered in white and milk chocolate. Also try the wasabi-covered peanuts, which are especially tasty. They also sell chocolates and candy, an unbelievable assortment of hot sauces, grilling spices and meat rubs and drink mixes. Already-packaged gift boxes and baskets make great gifts. For the easily amused, there are humorous T-shirts and boxer shorts and creative packaging and labels. Check out their Duck and Kill Devil Hills locations as well.
