When out shopping in Corolla, be sure to seek out Alice’s Craft Gallery in Monteray Plaza. Here you will find jewelry, pottery, glass, metals, wood, chimes, photography and sculptural wall art, almost every piece of it handmade by American artisans. Alice’s represents a few local artists and numerous North Carolina artists. This gallery is a good place to browse for a nice piece of art for yourself, but it’s also a great place to find a quality hand-crafted gift for a very affordable price. In business for 29 years on the Outer Banks, Birthday Suits is a favorite for swimwear — in fact, it’s been voted Best on the Beach for swimsuits for nine years in local polls. The original drive-through beverage store has been on the Outer Banks for more than 30 years and has become a tradition for visitors and locals alike. You can purchase passes to the concrete skatepark here, and in the summer, skate clinics are available for $30 for a 90-minute session from 10:30 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday in season. This shop is the headquarters for Kayak Corolla, the Wild Horse Safari and Segway of the Outer Banks (see Recreation). They specialize in family-oriented eco-adventures through the Outer Banks “back country.” Their gift shop also sells wild horse photos, sportswear, souvenir clothing and accessories that are perfect for wild horse fans. Beach Braids is the only Outer Banks shop offering natural henna tattoos in addition to black henna tattoos. Natural henna is a reddish-brown color instead of black. Beach Braids has a Mendhi artist on staff, and they also offer “Hollywood” tattoos with a wide range of designs. This store also sells custom, handmade jewelry.
